Tutorial: How To Convert Units From Feet, Inches To mm or Meter

Today on Building Contractor Secrets, I’m going to help you understand how to easily convert units from one system to the other. This is very necessary especially as the world is gradually becoming a digital place where a model could be developed in America but later sent to Canada for the final Prototype.

Well, a drawing, usually blueprint could be drawn in meters but would be executed by someone who only understand feet and inches. It there requires him or her to convert from meters to feet or inches and vice versa. Thus the importance of this post.
 
Internationally accepted standard measurement is in meters, millimeters which are units collectively known as Metric System. This is sole reason why almost all architectural drawings, floor plans, elevations, sections are drawn in millimeters. 
 
But because many of us are used to imperial system where feet and inches are used as units of measurement, it therefore becomes very important for you to understand how to convert these drawings from millimeter (mm) to feet or from meters (m) to feet
 
As you always know, no knowledge is lost. I really found this amusing because I discovered all the things I learnt in primary 1 turned out to become so very important on this post but I need it though.
 
I remember when my teacher used to teach me these simple units of conversion back in primary 1 and I couldn’t hold the laughter.
 
10 millimeter = 1 centimeter
 
10 centimeter = 1 decimeter
 
100 centimeter = 1 meter
 
1000 millimeters = 1 meter
 
1000 meters = 1 kilometer
 
So one question you may wanna ask is:
 
How many Millimeters Do we Have In One Inch?
 
The answer to that questions is quite simple because one inch has 25millimeters (25mm).
 

How Do I Convert Inches To Millimeter?

 
Its simple! Have it at the back of your mind that for every 1 inch, there are 25 millimeters and so work with that. If you have 10 inches, multiply by 25 and you’ll have 250millimeters.
 
To make this simpler, look at these below:
 
1 Inch = (25 x 1) = 25mm
 
2 Inches = (25 x 2) = 50mm
 
3 Inches = (25 x 3) = 75mm
 
4 Inches = (25 x 4) = 100mm
 
You can convert more to millimeters by following this same pattern. Its quite easy you know.
 
Another Important Questions is:
 

If A Block Measures 6 Inches, How many Millimeter Will That Be?

 
Well, if you’re a bricklayer and would like to know how thick a 6 Inches Solid or Hollow Sancrete Block can be, you can simply do this since we already know the the unit (1 inch = 25mm)
 
So you’ll only need to multiply 25 by 6 and I am sure your final answer would be = 150mm
 
So when an architect specifies 150mm wall thickness, he’s simply asking you use a 6 inch block to make the wall or make sure the wall it 6 inches thick.
 
Converࢢng this to meters, remember 1000millimeter (mm) is 1 meter(m), therefore divide 150mm by
 
1000mm=0.15m. The same formula applies to others.
 
Now we move to the next frame.
 
Now what if you live in countries where the imperial system of measurement is used? Countries where feet’s and inches are the common units of measurement.
 
Well, I’ll help you understand how to easily convert from meter to feet.
 

So How Do I Convert From Meter To Feet?

 
For feet we use approximately 3.3 feet to 1 meter, hence we usually goes in this order
 
How Many Feet Make 1 Meter?
 
1 meter = 3.3 feet
 
2 meter = (2 x 3.3) = 6.6 feet
 
3 meter = (3 x 3.3) = 9.9 feet
 
4 meter = (4 x 3.3) = 13.2 feet
 
5 meter = (5 x 3.3) = 16.5 feet
 
6 meter = (6 x 3.3) = 19.8 feet
 
You can convert more meters to feet using this method. Its best you use a calculator in order to be more accurate at what you arrive at as you convert.
 
With these, I’m sure you can convert any measurement to any unit that suits your understanding. You can convert inches to millimeter, you can convert meters to feet and just like that without stress.
 
So if you’re a student, a site worker, you have the experience but recently hit one huge job but the units are a little strange, they’re written or specified in feet but you’re used to Millimeters, Centimeters and Meters, this is a tutorial for you.
